A poverty-stricken farmer, escaping his barren village, is drafted into the French army during WWII. Later, he passionately joins the fight for his country’s liberation from French colonialism. Lakhdar-Hamina’s epic film traces the development of the Algerian national liberation struggle from the late 1930s to the outbreak of the Red Saint's Day Revolution on November 1, 1954.
